Your Period Is More Than Bleeding: What Your Cycle May Be Telling You
Most of us learned to think about our period in a very simple way:
Period starts → bleeding happens → period ends → see you next month.
We buy pads or tampons, track when the bleeding starts and move on with our lives.
But our menstrual cycle is bigger than those few days of bleeding.
And when we start paying attention to it, we may begin noticing patterns in how we feel throughout the month.
Our Body Is Constantly Changing
A menstrual cycle involves hormonal changes throughout the month.
That means the way we feel isn't necessarily exactly the same every day.
We might notice changes in our energy, appetite, sleep, skin, mood, discharge or physical comfort at different points in our cycle.
Some months may feel easy.
Others may feel completely different.
The interesting part isn't trying to make every cycle “perfect.”
It's simply becoming more aware of our own normal.
Start With Observation, Not Obsession
Cycle awareness doesn't mean we need to record twenty different data points every morning.
We can start very simply.
When did our period begin?
How long did it last?
Was the flow lighter or heavier than usual?
How did we feel before it arrived?
Were we particularly tired?
Did we sleep differently?
Were our cramps different this month?
Over time, small observations can form a picture.
And sometimes the most useful comparison isn't between ourselves and somebody else's “perfect 28-day cycle.”
It's between this month and our own previous months.
Even Our Period Products Can Help Us Pay Attention
One surprisingly simple detail is the colour of the material we use during our period.
We deliberately use a light-coloured, undyed cotton surface for Cloud Pads.
Part of the reason is simplicity—we don't think intimate products need unnecessary colour or decoration where they touch our skin.
But there's another benefit we appreciate: we can actually see our flow.
Rather than hiding everything behind a dark fabric, a light surface allows us to notice our menstrual flow more easily.
It's not a diagnostic tool, of course.
It's simply another way of being a little more familiar with our own body.
There's No Perfect Cycle
It's easy to open social media and feel like we're supposed to optimise everything.
Our sleep.
Our diet.
Our exercise.
And now, apparently, our menstrual cycle too.
But that's not what cycle awareness needs to be about.
Our bodies aren't machines.
Cycles naturally vary, and factors such as stress, sleep, travel, age and many other changes in our lives can influence how we feel.
The goal isn't perfection.
It's awareness.
From Period Care to Menstrual Wellness
When we created 28Moons, we started with pads because that was one of the most immediate parts of the menstrual experience we wanted to improve.
Cloud Pads became our first step.
But we've always believed the conversation should be bigger than pads.
Period care isn't only about collecting menstrual blood.
It's about how we feel during our cycle, how well we understand our bodies and whether the products and routines around us support our everyday lives.
Because if we spend years of our lives menstruating, those days shouldn't simply disappear into a category called:
“Just deal with it.”
We want to understand them better.
We want to care for ourselves better.
And ultimately, we want our periods to take up less of the energy we could be using to live, work, create, travel, love and do everything else that matters to us.
That's the future of menstrual wellness we want 28Moons to be part of.
And we're only getting started.
