Why Does My Skin Get Itchy During My Period?
Our period arrives.
We put on a pad.
A few hours later, something starts feeling… uncomfortable.
Maybe it feels hot. Maybe our skin feels irritated. Maybe we find ourselves discreetly adjusting our underwear every five minutes.
And sometimes, it gets genuinely itchy.
If this sounds familiar, we're definitely not the only ones asking:
Why does my skin get so uncomfortable during my period?
It's Not Always the Period Itself
When we think about period discomfort, cramps usually get most of the attention.
But our skin goes through the experience too.
During our period, the vulva and surrounding skin can spend hours in contact with menstrual fluid, moisture, sweat and our chosen menstrual product.
Add friction from walking and moving around, plus warm weather or exercise, and it's easy to understand why sensitive skin may sometimes become unhappy.
The product touching our skin can matter as well.
Some people may find certain materials, fragrances or other components irritating, while others can use the same products without any problem.
Our bodies are different—and that's exactly why menstrual care shouldn't be one-size-fits-all.
The Hot-and-Humid Problem
This was particularly important to us when we started 28Moons.
Living in a warm climate made us much more aware of what we were wearing during our periods.
A pad isn't something we use for five minutes.
We may wear menstrual products throughout the day, for several days, month after month.
When we started thinking about it that way, choosing what sits against our most sensitive skin suddenly felt much more important.
We wanted something softer.
Something more breathable.
Something we would actually look forward to wearing rather than tolerate.
Why We Chose Organic Cotton
When we developed Cloud Pads, the material touching our skin was one of our biggest considerations.
That's why we chose a soft organic-cotton surface and avoided unnecessary dyes, bleaching and fragrance in the cotton we use.
It sounds simple.
And that's the point.
Sometimes better period care isn't about adding more technology, perfume or complicated features.
Sometimes it's about taking things away.
A Few Small Changes Can Help
If our skin tends to become uncomfortable during our period, we can pay attention to a few things.
Changing our menstrual product when it becomes damp or saturated can help keep the area more comfortable. Wearing breathable underwear and avoiding heavily fragranced intimate products may also be worth considering.
And most importantly, we can pay attention to how different menstrual products make our body feel.
There is no single “best” period product for everyone.
Pads, tampons, menstrual cups, discs, period underwear and reusable pads all have their place.
What matters is finding what works for our body, our flow and our lifestyle.
Don't Ignore Persistent Irritation
Occasional discomfort from heat or friction is one thing. Persistent or severe itching is another.
Itching can have many causes unrelated to menstrual products, including skin conditions and infections. If irritation is severe, keeps returning or comes with unusual discharge, sores, swelling, pain or other symptoms, it's worth speaking with a healthcare professional rather than assuming our pad is responsible.
Understanding our body is part of taking care of it.
And that idea sits at the heart of 28Moons.
We don't believe periods should simply be something we endure every month.
We believe period care can be softer, more thoughtful and more comfortable—starting with something as simple as what touches our skin.
