Have we ever looked at the calendar and thought: “Ah. That explains everything.”
The tiredness. The cravings. Feeling bloated. Feeling more emotional than usual. Suddenly wanting to cancel every plan we have made.
For some of us, the days before our period can feel almost as noticeable as the period itself.
It is part of a bigger cycle
Our menstrual cycle is not simply a few days of bleeding followed by weeks of nothing. Hormone levels change throughout the cycle, and some people experience physical or emotional symptoms in the days leading up to menstruation.
These can include breast tenderness, bloating, changes in appetite, headaches, tiredness, mood changes and cramps. The timing and intensity can be different for each of us—and may even vary from month to month.
Listen without putting life on hold
At 28Moons, we are interested in cycle-aware self-care. That does not mean reorganising our entire life around a calendar or assuming every feeling is caused by our cycle.
It can be much simpler.
Maybe we prioritise sleep when we are particularly tired. Maybe we choose gentle movement when it feels better than an intense workout. Maybe we prepare something warm and comforting to eat.
Or maybe we simply acknowledge: “I am not feeling 100% today—and that is okay.”
Understanding our cycle can give us context. Sometimes context alone makes our body feel a little less mysterious.
Symptoms that are severe, new or disruptive deserve proper care. If premenstrual symptoms regularly interfere with daily life, a healthcare professional can help us explore what is happening.
