Why Does My Period Smell? What’s Normal—and What Isn’t?

Let’s talk about something we don’t talk about enough: period smell.

Most of us have probably experienced it. We go to change our pad and notice a particular smell—or become suddenly conscious of whether anyone around us can smell it too.

The first thing to know is simple: having some smell during our period is normal.

Menstrual fluid isn’t just blood. It also contains tissue and vaginal secretions, and once it leaves our body, it comes into contact with air, our skin and naturally occurring bacteria. All of these can affect how it smells.

So instead of feeling embarrassed about period smell, it can be more helpful to understand where it comes from.

Why Can Periods Smell Different?

Our period may smell slightly metallic because blood contains iron. At other times, the smell may become stronger after menstrual fluid has been sitting in a pad for several hours.

Heat and moisture can also play a role.

Think about wearing a pad on a hot summer day. Our intimate area is already naturally warm, and adding layers of material can create an even warmer, damper environment.

For some of us, this can feel uncomfortable—and may make odor more noticeable.

That was one of the things that made us rethink period care at 28Moons.

Instead of asking only:

“How much can this pad absorb?”

we started asking:

“How does it actually feel to wear for hours?”

Breathability Matters Too

Absorbency is important, but period comfort isn't only about preventing leaks.

The materials touching our skin matter too.

A breathable, soft surface can help us feel less hot and sticky, particularly if we live in a warm climate, exercise frequently or simply have sensitive skin.

This is one reason we chose organic cotton as the skin-facing material for Cloud Pads.

We wanted something that feels more like fabric and less like wearing a conventional sanitary product.

Soft. Breathable. Simple.

When Should We Pay More Attention?

Our bodies naturally have smells, and they aren't something we need to eliminate.

But knowing what is normal for our body is useful.

If we notice a suddenly different, particularly strong or unpleasant odor—especially together with unusual discharge, itching, burning, pain or other symptoms—it may be worth speaking with a healthcare professional.

Period care should help us become more comfortable with our bodies, not more ashamed of them.

Maybe Period Care Doesn't Need to Feel So… Period-y

For a long time, we accepted that periods came with a package:

Blood. Bulkiness. Stickiness. Smell. Irritation.

But some of those experiences aren't necessarily our period itself. They can also be influenced by what we wear and how we care for ourselves during those days.

That distinction was important to us when we created Cloud Pads.

Our goal isn't to pretend periods are always effortless.

It's to ask a much simpler question:

Can we make those few days every month feel a little better?

At 28Moons, we think the answer is yes.

One moon at a time.
