Can Stress Affect Our Period?

Can Stress Affect Our Period?

Deadline. Flight. Moving house. Three nights of terrible sleep.

And then our period behaves differently.

Coincidence? Not necessarily.

Stress and our cycle are connected

Our reproductive system does not operate separately from the rest of our body. The hormonal signalling involved in menstruation interacts with the systems involved in our stress response. Significant physical or psychological stress can sometimes coincide with later, earlier or missed periods.

That does not mean every change is “just stress.” Pregnancy, medications, changes in weight or exercise, perimenopause and health conditions can affect menstruation too.

This is why a changed cycle is information—not a diagnosis.

Menstrual wellness is bigger than products

Period care might start with choosing what we wear during menstruation, but it does not need to end there.

Sleep. Movement. Nourishment. Stress. Rest. The small rituals that help us slow down.

These are all part of how we care for ourselves throughout the month. Our goal at 28Moons is not simply to make bleeding more comfortable. It is to make the experience surrounding our cycle feel more understood, intentional and supported.

If a period is late and pregnancy is possible, taking a pregnancy test is a sensible first step. If changes persist, periods stop for several months, or we are worried about pain or bleeding, it is worth seeking medical advice rather than assuming stress is the whole story.
